The Urban Legend:

Betobetosan べとべとさん or Mr. Footsteps is an entity that follows people. It usually follows people traveling alone at night. You'll know Betobetosan is following if you hear the sound of wooden clogs behind you, keeping in sync with your steps. If you stop to see what is following, you will see nothing. Betobetosan is invisible to the human eye. If you keep walking then the sound of footsteps will keep coming closer. Though this is unnerving, don't be afraid. Betobetosan isn't a harmful Yokai. If you want this entity to leave then just step aside and say “Please, Betobetosan, you go first.” Then Bryobetosan will pass you and takes its leave.

There is only one known instance when this didn't work. A man was walking home with a lantern one night when he heard Betobetosan following. So he stepped aside and invited it to pass. Instead of passing he heard a voice say “No, Its too dark.” So the man offered it his lantern. Betobetosan said “Thank you” and the lantern was carried away. The next morning the man found his lantern returned. So if you hear wooden clogs following you in the night, just remember, you may have attracted an other worldly walking companion.
